History

Fifth Letter has been alive and kicking since April, 2005. In that time we’ve moved offices, experienced an earthquake, met fun people, and have had opportunities to be a part of some really great projects.

Elliot Strunk, founder and Creative Director of Fifth Letter, brings over a decade of experience to the business. His client experience ranges from large companies including Weyerhaeuser, Krispy Kreme, Sara Lee, and VF Corporation to educational institutions and nonprofits such as The University of North Carolina at Greensboro, Reynolda House Museum of American Art, The Enrichment Center, and Habitat for Humanity.

Prior to founding Fifth Letter, Strunk worked in various design studios, created packaging and in-store rebranding for a national bicycle retailer (and later art directed their national catalog), lent a hand in a couple of large corporations – one communications and the other pharmaceutical – and provided creative help for other clients in varying capacities.

Strunk’s work has won local, regional, and national awards from associations including the Addys, AIGA (The American Institute of Graphic Arts), CASE (The Council for Advancement and Support of Education), Dr. Toy, Graphic Design USA, Graphis, HOW, Print, Step Inside Design, and Type Directors Club, as well as appeared in articles published in Communications Arts, Dynamic Graphics, and Graphic Arts Monthly magazines. His work is also seen in twelve graphic design compendiums and is included in the permanent collection of the Library of Congress.

In addition to his work, Strunk has taught graphic design at Salem College and has served on the board of the Raleigh chapter of AIGA. Strunk graduated cum laude from Ohio University with a BFA in Graphic Design.
