88.5 WFDD
88.5 WFDD, based in Winston-Salem, is the oldest public radio station in North Carolina. The staff works hard to bring a variety of news, entertainment, and music programs to its listening audience of more than 90,000 in 32 counties covering the central portion of the state and stretching from Virginia to South Carolina.
WFDD was looking to boost its image through communications such as promotional materials, outdoor advertising, and premium item giveaways in addition to their first-ever annual report. The theme of “Join the Conversation” was coined by the station manager in a brainstorming session and has served as the cornerstone of all their outreach. The advertising focused not only on the hosts providing the station’s content, but also on businesses and individuals who contribute to the station through underwriting and volunteering.
Annual Report
WFDD’s annual report, which folds into a poster, echoes the interesting twists that public radio uses to deliver information. We used NPR’s corporate colors to reinforce the link between local participation and national content.
Financials include where WFDD contributions come from and how they are spent using proportional shapes (in this case speech bubbles) to visually depict the relationship. We also pulled some interesting numerical statistics about the station to highlight. the opposite side of the annual focuses on volunteers, business underwriters, and station-related events.

Underwriting Materials
WFDD asked for business underwriting materials based around our “Join the Conversation” theme. We decided that testimonials would be the best way for business people to be convinced that public radio is an attractive medium for promotional efforts.
Outdoor Advertising
We created a billboard to help WFDD reinforce their presence in the Greensboro, North Carolina, market, a neighboring city to Winston-Salem with overlapping public radio stations competing for audience attention.
Transit Advertising
We developed transit advertising for WFDD as well, creating a constant reminder for drivers on the roads of Winston-Salem to tune in to their local public radio station.
Program Topics
We worked with WFDD to craft a series of ads depicting both local public radio listeners and contributors as well as the national personalities behind many of the shows they like. In addition, we also created awareness ads centered around a powerful quote heard on the air or highlighting new programs added to the schedule.
