Seasoned in the South

Seasoned in the South

“Seasoned in the South” is a book of recipes from Bill Smith, the chef at Crook’s Corner, a well-known restaurant in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Arranged by season, uncomplicated, easy to create dishes are combined with interesting narratives told by Smith in the first person.

Algonquin Books approached Fifth Letter to create a dust jacket exemplifying the approachable and down-home (with a pinch of sophistication) nature of the book. The pig that appears on the cover is perched above the restaurant and serves as a landmark to guide hungry patrons.

Last Child in the Woods - Cover 1

Last Child in the Woods - Cover 1

“Last Child in the Woods” is a book that discusses reconnecting children with the natural world around them. Author Richard Louv argues that a generation of children raised on television and video games miss out on an important part of childhood — hiking, swimming, telling stories around campfires, and bonding with family and friends — while never developing an appreciation for nature.

Algonquin Books asked Fifth Letter to work on different cover concepts. We chose to highlight the various moments and emotions that can come when families and children connect with nature. The following covers are a series of concepts developed, but ultimately not used, for the paperback version of the book.

The $64 Tomato - Cover 1

The $64 Tomato - Cover 1

“The $64 Tomato” is a memoir chronicling one man’s journey to create the perfect environment for homegrown food. Through a hilarious series of misadventures, author William Alexander writes about working with landscaping contractors, fighting off armies of pests and hungry wildlife, and the backbreaking hours invested in working on his dream. The title comes from when Alexander does all his calculations for his investment in personal time, the labor of others, and all the materials, and realized that his homegrown tomatoes cost about $64 each.

Algonquin Books worked with Fifth Letter to develop cover concepts playing off the humorous aspect of the author’s writing style coupled with some of the traditional agrarian feel of gardening literature. The following covers are a series of concepts developed, but ultimately not used, for the hardback version of the book.
