Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art (SECCA)

The Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art (SECCA) is a gallery space in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, that presents and interprets contemporary art from across the United States with programs encompassing issues engaging artists today. In addition to exhibits and educational outreach, SECCA engages with the community through a number of different initiatives.

Have a look at the work.

2000 Shirt

Each year two non-profit organizations in Winston-Salem, the Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art (or SECCA) and the Twin City Track Club, got together for a 5K fundraiser named Art & Sole. We had the privilege of designing shirts for race participants for three years, and for each year we used a different artistic style to create a theme.

Our initial shirt was a bit of a challenge because the blue color was chosen in advance of our design. A loose initial sketch became a tighter sketch and then the shirt design itself. Both black and white worked well on the blue background, and the red and yellow colors allowed just the right accents for our illustration.

We decided to go with a letterpress approach for the second shirt. Big, blocky letters are coupled with wood block imprints and the silhouette of a runner in the background. This one may be our favorite.

Our third shirt has a sort of Russian Constructivist look to it, with the anonymous runner jumping and engaging with the type. All of the elements being on a tiled grid create an interesting dynamic for the shirt.

"Night Gallery" Postcard

We crafted a quick postcard for a gallery show that fell close to Halloween. The premise of the show was for artists to submit work meant to be viewed in low light. We used imagery that played up the idea of darkness being a scary thing.

"Characters at War" Mailer

This direct mail piece had to showcase one main exhibit while providing additional information for two others. The main gallery was filled with oversize cutouts of characters submitted by artists from all over the country. We played up the “war” idea by flipping the Rs in the title and using a sort of Constructivist approach to the typography. We also made sure the characters not only engaged with each other, but the title as well.
